message in a bottle

A poem, as a manifestation of language and thus essentially dialogue, can be a message in a bottle, sent out in the - not always greatly hopeful -belief that somewhere and sometime it could wash up on land, on heartland perhaps. Poems in this sense, too, are underway: they are making toward something. ~ Paul Celan

Imagine you have gone down to the shore and there, amidst the other debris..you find an unlikely looking bottle from the past. You bring it home and discover a message inside. This letter, so strange and disturbing, seems to have been making its way toward someone for a long time, and now that someone turns out to be you...
~ Edward Hirsch

At a critical moment, a seafarer tosses a sealed bottle into the ocean waves, containing his name and a message detailing his fate. Wandering along the dunes many years later, I happen upon it in the sand. I read the message, note the date, the last will and testament of one who has passed on. I have the right to do so. I have not opened someone elses's mail. The message in the bottle was addressed to its finder. I found it. That means, I have become it's secret addresse. ~ Osip Mandelstam

...and thus it is for all of us who read poems.

Artwork ~ "Seaside Summer" by Vitali Komarov

Kalianne, this is a lovely post. I'm rediscovering poetry as of late and have been thoroughly enjoying the renewed interest. I love all the message in a bottle quotes assembled here...Reminds me of the Police song in the 80's....

That's right I remember that one now - "I'll send an s.o.s. to the world..." by Sting and The Police! I'm also reminded of the film 'Message in a Bottle' with Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn, based on a Nicholas Sparks' novel (another film I've seen without reading the book!. I loved that film too.

I hope that someone gets my,
I hope that someone gets my,
Message in a bottle,
Message in a bottle... :-)

Kalianne,

Yes, as I am writing this, I am singing the song in my head. I, too, am discovering poetry.

Thank you for the quotes and for continuing to stir us towards a good writing.

blessings,

mari

Oh this seaside artwork is lovely. And I admire beautiful poetry. the kind that takes me somewhere beautiful or moves me to tears. I too loved the movie 'Message in a Bottle'...I watched it over and over while living in the midwest because I was soooo homesick for the Pacific ocean. I also have the soundtrack!. The instrumental songs at the end are my favorite.

I love to play soundtracks as they usually evoke the mood of my favorite films! Next time I watch MIB must pay particular attention to the soundtrack! I know you love poetry - I can tell by the lovely verses you post! ;) This lovely painting is by Vitali Komarov, a impressionist landscape artist whose work has been compared to Vincent Van Gough.

As one who writes poetry, I love these quotations. The idea that ones thoughts and images "find" their reader and resonate with them is what motivates (along with the creative impulse). It is a poetic notion in itself, that the poet places their words in this "bottle" and trusts the ideal person will find them.

I think I would like this book.

Thanks, Kalianne.

Kalianne,
What a lovely post you shared with us this morning. Thank you for stimulating a poetic nerve in me. I'm begining to find it odd that I have not paid attention to poetry.

I'm enjoying the reading list posted below too. While reviewing the list the question I found my self asking was, did I read that book or just see the movie? Thanks again for sharing.
Hugs,
Sue

Hi Kat,

It would be an honor to have you on my blog roll! I loose track of which blogs I've missed sometimes! I'm glad you liked this post. I'm enjoying Hirsch, his writings are breathing new life into poetry appreciation for me! I adore his book and hope to share more in future posts. I read some of your poems to my husband last weekend and he enjoyed them very much. Thank you for sharing your talent!

Poetry is for every season, but something about summer makes it especially appealing....I wonder why....could it be the joy of sitting outdoors with a book in hand, and the way that a beautiful summer afternoon puts one in a reflective mood?

Hello!
What a lovely poem and a lovely painting.
Unfortunately I have to comment that this painting is not Vitali Komarov as Komarov is a contempory painter and this painting is from late 9th century. I have some paintings fromn this "E. Vitali" painter and would like to find out more about him. Is there anyone who can help me? Where is this lovly painting from the blog?
Greetings,
Nik.
