For anyone not familiar with the BBC series Monarch of the Glen Lexi was the sassy cook at Glenbogle House - a grand Scottish estate from a bygone era. Throughout the series the tenants of Glenbogle struggle to retain their proud Scottish history with all it's traditions and relics within the setting of a modern economy and immense social change. The series is very enjoyable. It's enterprising cast of characters manage to marry the 'old with the new' in a delightful and entertaining way.
During the first series Lexi bakes a lovely batch of scones to placate a visiting bank executive who is threatening to withdraw the mortgage on Glenbogle House. I was enchanted by Lexi's tea tray of scones prepared especially for the occasion along side other treats from the Glenbogle larder. In the spirit of old time hospitality I decided to try baking a batch for a special visitor we were expecting during the week (not a bank manager fortunately)!
Despite the novel appeal of Lexi’s scones, after baking my own I discovered that flat scones are not traditional but merely evidence of dough that was too wet! Poor Lexi. No wonder Sir Hector lamented her cooking! Mine went into the oven looking pert and promising but came out as flat as pancakes. What to do with flat scones? Do what Lexi did! Sandwich pairs with jam and cream - a clever and effective disguise. Neither bank manager nor my guest were any the wiser.
Comparing the home baked scone to commercial varieties is analogous to equating homemade bread to shop bought breads or homegrown tomatoes to the bland supermarket specimens. There is little similarity. As a new convert to the advantages of home baked scones expect to hear me wax lyrical about them for a while as I continue to practice Nonna's lovely recipe.
Ah, wouldn’t it be lovely to be a queen of scones? And I dream...

Good morning Kalianne! At least it's in the early AM here in Kentucky:-) and I am up with my wee one at 5am after a lovely day of shopping.....
These scones looks delicious and I'm certainly going to try them for the Tea Society...We love our scones!
I've not seen Monarch on the Glen yet but that's another Netflix selection to add to the queue...Lovely and delectable post...Oh, hail Lady Kalianne, Queen of Scones!"
These scones do look so delicious ~ what a lovely treat for guests!
I have not seen the series Monarch of the Glen but I will look forward to checking it out!
I hope you have a lovely day filled with many blessings ~

I just adored curling up on a Sunday evening by the fire and watching Monach of The Glen nd from where I'm sitting those scones look mighty tempting. Can't get clotted cream in the South of France though :(
Those are the most beautiful scones I have ever seen! Yum! I hope you are having a great weekend!

Thanks for coming by. And thank you for the sweet comment on my blog look! I am quite happy with it. Have a wonderful Sunday...or whatever day it is by you!
Thank you for visiting my blog, very nice to meet a new friend! I am also a homemaker, and I love to bake. I have decided to pick up a new hobby learning to bake bread, without the use of a bread machine. I know I can do it!
No I'm not familiar with 'Monarch of the Glen', but it looks like something I would watch. I don't have cable, and am guessing you are able to watch it on cable. I love to watch Masterpiece Theatre that aires many BBC movies.
YOu are right about homemade scones...they do not compare to store or cafe' ones. I make scones often using a faithful recipe from an Old Victoria issue. People always say they don't taste like the scones they are used to and they even wonder if they really are scones. But my family will only eat mine or my daughters homemade scones. Blueberry and choc. chip are our favorite to make. Now, I want to whip up a batch!
The Apron Queen is pleased to meet the Scones Queen! Those scones look delicious. I need a midnight snack now. :)
Glad you stopped by. We think alike. I am thinking about making aprons or pillows for the women in the family for Christmas. Now I just have to drag out the sewing machine. :)
Flat or tall, I'd eat them! Scrumptious-looking with the jam and cream. Anyone for a cuppa?
My mother comes from the east coast of Canada and "down east" they call them "biscuits", which is funny since what we call "cookies", the Scots call biscuits. Again, I'll eat them regardless of what they're called, as long as they taste good.
Funny old world!
Thanks for a "sweet" post Kalianne.

Dear Kalianne;
I have been making scones for quite sometime, but I have yet to use them as sandwiches. Yours look absolutely delicious. Maybe I'll post my recipe also. Mine are cream scones and my family and everyone who eats them really enjoy them.
Thank you for sharing,
mari
Dear Mari
That sounds wonderful. I am so intrigued by scones and recipes at the moment (painfully evident to all)! I'd love to see your cream scones. They sound delicious!
I just wanted you to know that I've tried putting 'My House By The River' on my Blog List (sidebar) however Blogger is not picking up the feed for some reason? So I've popped you under "More Favorites".
Blessings,
Kalianne xo
Kalianne,
What a beautifulo name you have! Your blog is so lovely and peaceful. I have so enjoyed reading all of you posts and look forward to many more.
I will add you to my list of lovely places to visit on my blog.
Hugs,
Sue
Very nice photos, and what an amusing story to go with them.
Scones are, to me, the archetypal Scottish food. I have always wanted to have them with home made jam and clotted cream. The height of Scottishness, to my mind.
I remember that scene from The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, when she told the girls to butter the scones generously!
Lavinia, I must check out that book sometime, anyone who likes well buttered scones is worth getting to know ;)
How very interesting. Your scones almost look like a biscuits. Having said that, they look amazingly good !!!! Clarice
Kalianne, I've updated my Netflix queue and added Monarch of the Glen...:-)...I'm still watching The House of Eliott as well and loving every minute. I just finished the 10th episode Sunday night.
I have a yummy recipe for pecan cream cheese scones that we absolutely devour at our Tea Society events... They're perfect served with fresh butter or lemon curd and clotted cream. Would you like the recipe? Also, if you want to know more about the Tea Society, please email me from my profile page. Have a great evening!
Kalianne,
Thanks for visiting, and leaving the lovely comments! :)
Your scones look absolutely yummy, and soooo pretty. Do you have any left by any chance? I would like to invite myself and come over... ;)
Have a great night!
Hi Kalianne,
It's me again. I forgot to mention in my last comment that Heavenly Bamboo is quite common in the South. It might have another name in other parts of the country.
We have watched the series through several times now and love it. There are a few things I don't like in the series but over all it is a beautiful escape to a Scottish Castle with good cookin' with Lexi!
They look delicious!
Looks really nice :)
Rebecca, your pecan cream cheese scones sound absolutely delicious -yes please I'd love the recipe. If you like I can be contacted via the email link on my profile. I'm really looking forward to seeing The House of Elliot. We're up to season 2 of M of the G and will watch til the end of season 3. Next in line is Onedin Line for Mum's visit. Then House of Elliot. Should be fun! Looks like this winter we're glued to the sofa! ;)
It would be wonderful to live at Glenbogle, eating scones and listening to the wind blow.
Those are the most delicious looking scones I've ever seen! I am putting it on my to make and eat list! Thank you for sharing :)
